James Earle Fraser's Indian Head nickel design is thought to be one of the best coin designs out of all U.S. coins. The front of the coin shows a Native American, created from a mixture of the features from Indian chiefs of three different tribes. The rear of the coin depicts an American Bison (or buffalo).
Smaller sizes have also been produced by the U.S. Mint, including the 1/2 ounce gold buffalo coin. For 2008, 5 dollar, 10 dollar and twenty five dollar face value coins were minted with one tenth, one quarter or 1 half ounce.
According to the U.S. Mint website, the American Buffalo bullion coins are struck at the New York based west point mint. Only the proof version has a "w" stamped as a mint mark behind the indians neck. The bullion version does not possess the "w".
A little known fact:
The American Buffalo gold coin was made to compete with other 24-karat gold coins being imported from other countries. This is because collectors preferred foreign gold coins (like the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf) that contained over 8% more purity of gold than the American Gold Eagle (the foreign coins being nearly 100% purity). The U.S. government intend to cash in on further sales of the 24-karat coins worldwide, making up to sixty percent of the worlds gold market.
